First surveyed in 1799 by civil engineer John Matthews and organized under its present name in 1807, Hamilton Township has a long and rich history. The purported presence of ancient mounds, also known as earthworks, suggests that the township’s history predates Matthes’s survey and that the land was occupied by earlier settlers. However, others suggest that these are simply natural features of a once heavily glaciated area and have been mistakenly identified as burial mounds.
